Charged Person Using Van De Graaff Generator (D8) [5B10.10]
Electrostatics - Electric Charge
Show that an isolated object receives a buildup of charge and that like charges repel.
The demonstrator stands on the insulating stool with the wig on (or with long hair) and places their hand on the Van De Graaff machine. The wig may also be placed directly upon the top of the VdG with some tape. Once the Van De Graaf is switched on, the strands of hair or strands of the wig will all receive the same charge and repel each other. This will cause the hair to stand up, directed radially outward from the head. The hair may need some light shaking or brushing to separate and stand up.
